Cancellieri Demonstrates Glimpses of Genius in Silver Lining for Haywire Lazio

The feeling at their home stadium was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had allowed a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.

A Season Unraveling?

Had their campaign falling apart, or was there ever a thread holding it together in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, before he publicly stated that the board had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Rumours that his departure was imminent were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy during matches as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, it has been hard to determine if they are improving or self-destructing.

Matteo's Unforeseen Comeback

A single player remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this season. He completed the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were advocating for him to extend his stay for another season. The signing restriction forced a rethink. They were unable to reduce their roster without replacements.

He signed initially under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances with the club in that campaign, the vast majority of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."

Discovering His True Position

Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to determine the exact type of the player's talent. Labeled as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
