Seven accused individuals of German left-wing extremist group face trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for attacks on sites in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the American move and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
