Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses Europe's True Danger: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an existential risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The true challenge facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Divide Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

The growing disparity is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity raises a vital issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a two-horse race between the United States and China, with Europe starting at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, which limits the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A US startup can launch a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among 27 separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, one can find causes for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance serious reform. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and premier labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
