A recent study reveals that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users purchasing such drugs should be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Experts suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become starving," described a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural management.
