World Health Organization Sounds Warning Over Acute Scarcity of Obesity Injections

Under a tenth of people that would benefit from weight-loss injections such as Wegovy have access to them, caution the World Health Organization as it publishes its inaugural recommendations on the medications.

With in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide now obese, it is urging more widespread and fairer access to these injectable treatments.

Based on projections, in excess of 2,000,000,000 could be obese by 2030 without intervention.

"Our new guidelines recognises that excess weight is a chronic disease that can be addressed with holistic and continuous treatment," stated its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, insufficient output, and supply-chain constraints are significant barriers to broad access to the jabs that can help people shift considerable weight, explains the agency.

Skinny Jab Shortage

Even under the current most optimistic outlook, the supply of these medications could only cover about 100 million people – less than 10% of eligible patients, according to the WHO.

The advice urges nations and manufacturers to expand access, through strategies including patent sharing.

A patent on a key compound – the primary component of a leading brand – is due to expire in several countries in 2026.

How Obesity Injections Function

The injections replicate a body's own hormone to reduce digestion speed, reduce hunger and boost the sense of being full so users consume fewer calories.

People typically start to lose weight after several weeks of starting on the regular doses.

Research points to patients may see weight return a year later of halting the medication, when their typical hunger come back.

Being carrying excess weight raises your chance for experiencing medical conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and specific cancers.

Excess weight impacts individuals in all nations and was associated with 3.7 million deaths worldwide in 2024, as per the WHO.
